A 72 hour Hackathon-style competition focusing on the creation of educational videos.

How it works

Event objective

The Educational Video Challenge is a joint event established by the Oulu University of Applied Sciences in Finland and the Pädagogische Hochschule Oberösterreich in Austria. The Challenge is organized as a Hackathon-style educational event in which university-level students work together in teams to create educational videos. The event will be held simultaneously in both locations as well as online during the event days - November 18 -21, 2014 and will culminate in a live streamed screening when the winners are announced.

What do we mean by an educational video?

For the purposes of the Challenge event, we are focusing on educational videos as instructional videos. Therefore, we consider an educational video to have a pedagogical use and must conform to the following criteria in order to be considered a submission for the Challenge:
  1. Videos must be maximum 5 minutes in length.
  2. Videos must be useful to a teacher to support instruction at any level (elementary, secondary or tertiary education) and in any subject.
  3. You can use any form of technology to create your video (mobile devices or video cameras and editing software).
  4. A link of your video must be posted on the 'submissions' page of this blog by 11.00 Austrian time / 12.00 Finnish time November 21, 2014 in order to be considered.

Who can participate?

While the event will involve cohorts of students in both Finland and Austria during the event days, the Challenge is open to anyone, anywhere who wishes to submit a video.

How it Works...

Step 1.

We will be announcing the criteria to guide video submissions on November 18, 2014 at 11.00 Austrian time / 12.00 Finnish time. In other words, there will need to a couple of things that every video must include.

Be aware that all submission should be in either English or have English sub-titles.

Step 2.

Once you know the key criteria, you will need to think of an idea for your video and find a team (you can also make a video on your own).

You will have approximately 72 hours to make your video and submit it to us. All submissions should be posted by Friday November 21, 2014 at 11.00 Austrian time / 12.00 Finnish time.

Step 3.

A panel of judges (made up of individuals in both Austria and Finland) will go over all submissions. Winners will be announced during a live screening on November 21, 2014. See the webinar page of this blog for information about the screening.
